Pakistan met office issued show cause notice

Islamabad, June 3 (IANS) The Prime Minister House in Pakistan on Friday asked the meteorological department to submit a report explaining its failure in notifying the provincial government of a thunderstorm forecast that claimed dozens of lives.

Gusty winds and rains that lashed Islamabad and Rawalpindi killed at least 30 people and injured over 200 on Wednesday.

“The high intensity thunderstorm which hit parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Islamabad late in the evening of June 1, had started gathering in the sky by mid-afternoon. This was clearly visible even to the naked eye by 4.00 p.m,” the statement from the PM House said.

Despite having access to latest equipment the department failed to inform the provincial governments of the storm, the statement added.

The slack shown by the Met office resulted in the loss of precious lives, the statement said.
