Justice Shah, Maharashtra Police ex-chief on Pro Kabaddi Ethics panel

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) Ahead of its fourth season, Pro Kabaddi on Thursday named ombudsman Justice (retired) A.P. Shah and Maharashtra's former Director General of Police A.N. Roy to the five-member ethics and governance committee.

The other members of the panel are Deepak Jacob, Charu Sharma and Pro Kabaddi League's Commissioner Anupam Goswami, a release from the league said.

Justice Shah is a former Chief Justice of the Delhi and Madras High Courts while Roy has been a distinguished DGP of Maharashtra and Mumbai Police Commissioner. Justice Shah is also the Indian cricket board's (BCCI) ombudsman.

Sharma and Jacob are nominees of the Mashal Sports board, which has promoted the league along with Star Sports.

"This newly constituted Committee is mandated with a broad remit to oversee matters relating to Governance, Anti-Corruption, Anti-Racism, Anti-Doping and the Code of Conduct," the release said.

"In order to uphold the highest standards of the game, this committee is empowered with the authority to impose disciplinary measures in the event of violations of the aforementioned framework of rules," it added.

Commenting on the role of the ethics and governance committee, Justice Shah said, "In the very recent past, global sport and international events have come under immense scrutiny across all aspects of their conduct and management."

"I am convinced that the re-presentation of the indigenous sport of Kabaddi with a modern, competitive and international face, offers an opportunity to showcase to the world India's commitment to sporting benchmarks of excellence and governance that are second to none," he added.

Roy hailed the formation of the committee and said he is excited to be part of it.

"I am tremendously excited to be part of the most exciting development in Indian sports and Pro Kabaddi's emergence as a sporting property," he said.

"It is my expectation, after a career in law and order and public administration, to bring a wealth of experience and insight into helping build a sport for which I have a great affinity, and have endorsed throughout my career," the former top cop added.

Pro Kabaddi's fourth season is set to commence on June 25, with the play-offs scheduled between July 29 and 31.
