Punjab Congress chief seeks more powers for state units

New Delhi, May 30 (IANS) Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh has suggested that the party high command should delegate more powers to the state leaders, especially to fight "regional leaders" in various states.

"If you have to deal with regional leadership, you must give some powers to the state leaders," Singh said in an interview to CNN News18.

"The party has to strengthen itself for whatever has happened in the country," he said in a veiled reference to Congress's debacle in the recent assembly elections.

Asked whether dual power centres of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi harmed the party, Singh said it's high time for the "new generation to emerge".

"I have worked with Sonia Gandhi and found her a very good leader. But she is 70. Time has come for the new generation to emerge. Obviously she is tired," Singh said, adding "it will be only fair if she wishes to hand over".

To another question, Singh said that once given power and responsibility, Rahul Gandhi "will also emerge".

"I have worked with his (Rahul's) father. He was also like this. Rahul will also emerge in due course," Singh said.
