Nine killed in Baghdad bomb attack

Baghdad, May 30 (IANS) At least nine people were killed and 30 others injured in two bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Monday, a police source said.

In one attack, a booby-trapped car parked at a popular marketplace in Shaab district detonated in the morning, leaving seven people dead and at least 20 others wounded, the source told Xinhua news agency.

In the second attack, a motorcycle bomb went off at a commercial area in Sadr city district in eastern Baghdad, killing two people and injuring 10 others, the source said.

The toll could rise further, the source said adding that the victims were being rushed to a nearby hospital.

Iraq is currently witnessing a fresh wave of violence since the Islamic State (IS) group took control of parts of the country's northern and western regions in June 2014.

The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq said earlier that in April alone, 741 Iraqis were killed and 1,374 were wounded in "acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict".

Many blame the current chronic instability, cycle of violence, and the emergence of extremist groups such as the IS on the US, which invaded Iraq in March 2003 under the pretext of seeking to destroy weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the country.

The war led to the ouster and eventual execution of Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, but no WMD were found.
