Coptic Pope announces mass for EgyptAir crash victims

Cairo, May 20 (IANS/AKI) A mass will take place here on Sunday for the 66 killed when an EgyptAir plane crashed into the Mediterranean, Coptic Pope Tawadros II announced.

The mass for the victims of the disaster will be held at Cairo's Abbasiya Cathedral on Sunday, state-run daily Al-Ahram cited Tawadros II as saying.

Flight MS804 took off from Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris late on Wednesday bound for Cairo and lost contact with ground crews at 2.30am local time on Thursday, about 16 kilometres inside Egyptian airspace.

State-owned EgyptAir said on its official Twitter account that the Egyptian army and navy had found body parts, luggage, passengers' belongings, and plane seats. The Egyptian military said earlier that it had located "personal belongings of the passengers and parts of the plane debris," in the sea 290 kilometres north of Alexandria.

Thirty Egyptians, 15 French citizens, two Iraqis, a Briton and various other nationalities were aboard the doomed Airbus 320-232 plane, which was 12 years old.

Pope Francis on Friday sent condolences to Egyptian President Abel Fattah al-Sisi over the tragic crash, whose causes are as yet unknown.
