Gurgaon court issues notice to MLA on woman's suit for damages

Gurgaon, May 19 (IANS) A court here on Thursday issued a notice to Gurgaon's BJP legislator Umesh Aggarwal, against whom a suit for damages of Rs.35 lakh has been filed for allegedly using derogatory words for a rape victim, a lawyer said.

The woman, aged around 40, had filed two rape cases against Gurgaon Deputy Mayor Parminder Kataria.

"The court has issued damages notice of Rs.35 lakh against MLA Aggarwal. The next hearing is on May 30," the petitioner's lawyer Manoj Kumar told IANS.

"During a TV show on March 10, replying to a question regarding rape charge against the deputy mayor, Aggarwal called the woman complainant a 'stigma on the name of women'. The petitioner has demanded damages for such irresponsible statement by a lawmaker," Kumar said.

Aggarwal told IANS: "I have not received any notice. I have already registered an FIR against the woman for extortion and blackmailing in March."

The woman earlier filed two complaints of rape and one of assault. Kataria filed complaints of extortion against her.
