New Delhi, May 19 (IANS) BJP has won a "new state" while the Congress has lost two, union Minister Prakash Javadekar said on Thursday stressing that the two national parties would be the main ones to compete in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Javadekar expressed satisfaction over the Bharatiya Janata Party's performance in the state assembly elections, and said: "Congress has lost two of the states it ruled and BJP has gained one."
"Ultimately, it's up to the national party, which will be the main parties in 2019 election," he said.
BJP has emerged victorious in Assam, which had been ruled by Congress for 15 years.
The minister said that in politics, the job is to assure victory, and if that does not happen, the aim is to defeat the enemy, or have a friendly party win.
Asked if he was referring to AIADMK and Trinamool Congress as "friendly parties", the minister clarified that both were "independent parties".
"The enemies are the Communists (parties) and the Congress... They shall be defeated... TMC and AIADMK are independent parties, they take decision as per their choice," he said.
Javadekar, who was also BJP's election in-charge for Tamil Nadu, said that the result in Tamil Nadu was expected.
"Mamata's victory and Jayalalithaa's likely victory is a matter of what people were already talking about on the street. I campaigned in Tamil Nadu and what Tamil people were saying is that we want 'Amma' and this is what's happening," he said.
