Alliance with Congress a wrong decision: Gurudas Dasgupta

New Delhi, May 19 (IANS) The Left's decision to join hands with the Congress in West Bengal was a "wrong decision", CPI veteran Gurudas Dasgupta said on Thursday.

"Tie-up with Congress was a wrong decision. It did not work for us," the Communist Party of India (CPI) leader said as Left parties trailed behind the Congress in the state, where Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress appeared set to retain power.

"It is time for deep introspection. I believe the tie-up with the Congress was not a positive step. Their votes increased but our votes went down," Dasgupta told TV channel Times Now.

The Congress and the Left had formed a pre-poll alliance in West Bengal, where Trinamool Congress came to power in 2011, ending the 37-year-long rule of the Left parties in the state.

The Left parties also faced criticism for striking an alliance with the Congress, against which they were fighting the assembly poll battle in Kerala.
