Odisha may get rainfall in next 24 hours

Bhubaneswar, May 16 (IANS) Rain and thundershowers, coupled with gusty winds, are likely to hit some parts of Odisha on Tuesday under the impact of a low pressure area formed over Bay of Bengal, met officials said.

A well-marked low pressure area has been formed over southwest Bay of Bengal, and it would move northwestwards and concentrate into a depression during next 24 hours brining rainfall at some places in the state on Tuesday, said the Bhubaneswar met department.

It said that rain or thundershower would occur at one or two places over the state during next 24 hours.

"Gusty surface wind from southwesterly direction with 45 to 50 kmph speed and gusting to 55 kmph would prevail along and off Odisha coast," said the department, advising fishermen not to venture into sea.

Meanwhile, a total of 14 places in the state recorded temperature above 40 degrees Celsius out of which five places recorded temperature above 42 degrees.

The highest temperature of 44.5 degree Celsius was recorded at Bhawanipatna followed by Sundargarh at 44 degrees and Talcher at 42.2 degree, said a bulletin.

The state government has confirmed death of 18 people due to sunstroke. In 78 cases out of total 187 reports of alleged death due sun-stroke received from different sources, the death is found to have occurred due to other reasons, said a release from the special relief commissioner's office.
