'Keep Jadhavpur varsity in loop over auditorium events'

Kolkata, May 11 (IANS) The Jadavpur University authorities have to be kept in the loop on permits issued by the alumni association to rent out the Triguna Sen auditorium for programmes, it was decided at a meeeting here.

"From now on, the university will have to be kept in the loop about the programmes. There has to be a co-ordination among us as the auditorium is located within the campus," Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das said after a closed door meeting with the association members on Tuesday.

The varsity has been at the centre of unrest following the screening of Vivek Agnihotri's film "Buddha In A Traffic Jam", triggering loud protests from a large section of left-leaning students loyal to Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students' Union (FETSU) and sparked clashes.

The screening was originally organised at the auditorium by a group backed by RSS's student wing ABVP. The alumni association is in-charge of issuing permits and it had subsequently cancelled the request which led the filmmaker to go for an open air screening,

Following the clashes, university authorities eventually filed a police complaint against four outsiders - three of them ABVP activists - for allegedly molesting female students during a commotion over an open-air screening of the film.

A large section of students led by FETSU marched in protest a day later.
