Indonesia lifts suspension on football body

Jakarta, May 11 (IANS) Indonesian Youth and Sport Minister Imam Nahrawi said on Wednesday that he has signed a document to end sanctions on the country's football association PSSI.

The lifting of the suspension on PSSI was taken after the world football governing body FIFA sent a letter to the government to terminate sanction against PSSI before its congress in Mexico on May 13, reports Xinhua.

"The decision is taken (partly) due to appreciation on FIFA which will escort a reform in Indonesia's soccer," Nahrawi said.

Nahrawi said that the government was optimistic that PSSI would push necessary reforms in the country, where soccer is widely popular.

The ministry's policy is expected to end FIFA sanction on PSSI that barred the Indonesian association from participating in several international events.

In April 2015, the sport ministry froze PSSI and the nation's football competition due to violation against government regulations on football league.

The decision led to a crisis of the national football as FIFA also froze PSSI from participating in international events from May 2015.

FIFA issued the sanction on the reason that the government had intervened internal affairs of PSSI.
