Lucknow, May 10 (IANS) A Muslim woman and her daughter have been felicitated for their campaign in their native village for the construction of toilets to end the obnoxious practice of open-defecation, an official said on Tuesday.
"They not only constructed a toilet in their own house despite poverty but also motivated 418 families in Papnamau village to do so," District Magistrate Raj Shekhar told IANS.
The authorities honoured Noor Jahan and her daughter Nargis by handing over Rs.2,000 each and certificates.
Both said they were inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for maintaining cleanliness and to end open-defecation.
The village will become open-defecation-free in two weeks once 13 more toilets are constructed, the official said.
