Jaipur, May 10 (IANS) A family court in Jodhpur has annulled a child marriage solemnised a year ago, an NGO official said on Tuesday.
"The order annulling the marriage was provided by the family court on Tuesday. The marriage was performed in February 2015 when the boy was 16 years old. Finally, he got justice," Kriti Bharti, rehabilitation psychologist and managing trustee of Saarthi Trust told IANS on phone
Shravan (name changed), now 17, a Bikaner resident, was forced into the marriage by family elders in 2015 to Sri Ganganagar's woman resident who was 10 year older to him.
Shravan said he was against the marriage and on the pretext of appearing for competitive examinations shifted to Jodhpur. With the help of Saarthi Trust, he approached the family court for annulment of his marriage.
"We counselled the woman. She also agreed to cooperate. Finally, the court ordered annulment," Bharti said.
Every year, in Rajasthan, despite strict rules and regulations, thousands of child marriages are performed, especially on Akshya Tritiya or Akha Teej. This year Akshya Tritiya was observed on May 9.
Bharti said she had so far been able to get around 30 child marriages annulled.
