More rains, strong winds expected in Ujjain

Ujjain, May 6 (IANS) More rain and high velocity winds were expected in Ujjain, the weather office here said Friday, a day after seven people were killed at the Ardh Kumbh Mela when some temporary structures collapsed due to a heavy downpour.

Director Meteorological Department Anupam Kashyapi told reporters that there was a possibility of a storm hitting the city with winds gusting at speeds of 40 to 50 km per hour.

He said moisture-laden clouds have gathered increasing the possibility of "heavy rains in many parts of the state, including Ujjain".

Heavy rains and strong winds left a trail of death and destruction on Thursday in Ujjain, hosting the month-long pilgrimage Sinhastha Kumbh Mela. The city is being visited by tens of thousands of devotees and tourists for the event that ends May 21 with the last holy dip in the Kshipra river.
