Panaji, May 4 (IANS) Nearly 650 lifeguards posted on Goa's beaches have threatened to go on strike from May 15 demanding regularisation of their services.
Suhas Naik, secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress, told reporters that a notice has been served to the state tourism ministry, which oversees deployment of lifeguards on Goa's beaches.
"We did not want to go on strike, especially because after our strike in January, we were told by the government that our demands would be met," Naik said.
Naik said the lifeguards were demanding regularisation of their services and a pay hike.
Goa's 105-km coastline has several dozen beaches, which attract over four million tourists, half a million of whom are foreign nationals.
