Budapest, May 3 (IANS) The European football governing body, UEFA approved the admission of Kosovo as its new member during the 40th UEFA Congress here on Tuesday.
The vote saw controversial discussions as expected, mainly because Serbia opposed Kosovo's admission to the UEFA, reports Efe.
A total of 28 countries voted in favour of the admission, with 24 against and two invalid votes.
After the vote, Football Federation of Kosovo president Fadil Vokrri expressed his happiness that Kosovo has joined the European federation.
Before the vote, Serbian Football Association president Tomislav Karadzic stressed that his country would never vote for this admission.
Karadzic noted that soccer should not change the borders of a country, in reference to Serbia not recognizing Kosovo as an independent state.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognised Kosovo in 2014, which has allowed the country to play friendlies since then.
