Kerala High Court helps save nine-month-old baby

Thiruvananthapuram, May 3 (IANS) A division bench of the Kerala High Court took the lead in saving the life of a nine-month-old girl suffering from a liver ailment.

The bench, comprising Justice C.K. Abdul Rahim and Justice Shaji P. Chaly, intervened when the child's father Basheer, a native of the capital district, filed a habeas corpus plea stating that owing to marital dispute, his wife Sajina is not providing their daughter Alia Fathima medical treatment.

The bench took up the case and directed the KIMS Hospital in the city to go ahead with the treatment.

"The state government chipped in with Rs.10 lakh and our hospital took care of the remaining expenses as part of our social obligation. We also got a donor, a young woman who willingly came forward to donate a portion of her liver, and the transplant was done successfully," said a spokesperson of the hospital.

Through this humane intervention, the bench also brought the couple together.

Judge Rahim, along with his wife, also visited the hospital to wish the baby girl and her parents when she was being discharged.

Justice Rahim said it was the greatest moment in his judicial life.

"When one retires there will be something to remember, and this is going to be a cherished memory of my judicial life," said Rahim.
