Delhi Metro broke my pessimism about India: Panagariya

New Delhi, May 3 (IANS) NITI Aayog vice chairman Arvind Panagariya on Tuesday said the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has broken his pessimism about the country and it is today "unthinkable how life would be without Delhi Metro".

Speaking on the occasion of the 22nd Foundation Day of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog vice chairman, who was the chief guest, said: "I used to be very pessimistic about India during the 1980s.

"I thought India would not get far in terms of development. But the DMRC broke my pessimism about the country. It gives me great hope. It's unthinkable how life would be without Delhi metro."

Appreciating the efforts of DMRC, Panagariya said: "It was absolutely astonishing that within a span of 15 years or so the metro has a network of around 200 km today. It is an island of excellence. At least in metro, we have the services of the First World that we are trying to get in other areas as well."

As the DMRC celebrated its 22nd Foundation Day on Tuesday, the Mandi House Metro station was adjudged the "Best Metro Station".
