Delhi government orders summer vacation in schools from May 11

New Delhi, May 3 (IANS) Providing relief to students of the national capital from the scorching heat, the Delhi government on Tuesday ordered all government and private schools to advance their summer vacations to May 11.

The government's decision came after the city witnessed its hottest day of the season on Monday as the maximum temperature settled at 44 degrees Celsius, five notches above the season's average.

"The directorate of education (DoE) has issued a circular to all the heads of government/aided/private/NDMC/MCD/DCB schools, directing them to observe mandatory summer vacations from May 11," the Delhi education department said in a statement.

"The decision has been taken looking at the very hot weather prevailing in Delhi and prediction that temperature is likely to rise further," it added.

However, there was a drop of four notches in the maximum temperature on Tuesday as it settled at 39.6 degrees Celsius.
