New Delhi, April 28 (IANS) Rahuri Municipal Council in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district on Thursday became the country's first civic body to attain integration with the government's 'digital locker' initiative for issuance of all essential documents directly to the applicant's online account, Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said here.
Calling upon civic bodies around the country to follow Rahuri in expediting the process of digital governance, the minister said that this was essentially meant to bring in transparency in the administration and restore peoples confidence in government.
A key part of the "Digital India" initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the free government scheme provides a virtual vault in cyberspace for the safe-keep of documents like birth certificates and property papers.
As easy as opening an e-mail account, the free Digital Locker facility on a cloud, or cyberspace, allows any individual with an Adhaar card and a linked mobile phone to sign up for the personal storage space to securely store e-documents and links of such official certificates.
Then IT Secretary R.S. Sharma had told IANS last July that a Digital Locker account would be a convenient way of storing certificates in a digitised format, enabling a user to conveniently see his/her certificates online, while various agencies will also be able to push documents into the locker". All the documents could also be shared electronically.
