Mammootty takes lead to help those suffering from heat

Kochi, April 27 (IANS) Superstar Mammootty on Wednesday met Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to seek support from the state government to bring solace to those suffering on account of the rising temperature.

Wednesday saw the temperature in districts like Palakkad and Kannur crossing 35 degrees and according to the forecast, is likely to go up by three to four degrees in the coming days. It is also likely to continue till Saturday.

Mammootty told Chandy that there are so many people suffering on account of the heat wave and water has become a scarce commodity.

"I have called a meeting of all like-minded people who can join us to provide some solace to the sufferers and I wish the state government should also do something," Mammootty told reporters in the presence of Chandy.

Chandy said he is cancelling all his programmes for tomorrow (Thursday) and will meet ministers and officials to discuss the heat wave and take remedial measures.

"We are happy that people like Mammootty have come forward, and the government will also take this up and see what best we can do for this," said Chandy.

Health authorities have warned that adequate safety measures should be taken by people and it's best that in the coming days from 11 a.m to 3 p.m, people should remain indoors. If they go outside, they should carry an umbrella but working under the sun should be avoided.

Kerala has been experiencing a rise in temperatures in the past two weeks and summer showers, which are expected to provide relief, have also not been received like in the past.
