Kolkata, April 26 (IANS) Saradha chit fund scam accused and Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra, who is now in jail, was on Tuesday admitted to the SSKM hospital after he complained of chest pain.
Sources said the former state transport and sports minister was admitted under the cardiology department where he was brought in an ambulance from the Alipore Correctional Home (as jails are called in Bengal).
Tests were being carried out to assess his condition.
Mitra is contesting the West Bengal assembly polls as a Trinamool candidate from North 24 Parganas district's Kamarhati constituency that went to the hustings on Monday.
Mitra has been behind bars since his arrest on December 12, 2014, barring a brief period in October 2015 when he was granted bail by a lower court. The relief was subsequently cancelled by the Calcutta High Court.
He had won from the constituency in 2011 by over 24,000 votes.
