Turkey shocked as Trabzonspor supporter attacks referee

Istanbul, April 25 (IANS) There was shock and disbelief in Turkey on Monday following Sunday's incident when the Super Lig match between Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor was suspended after a supporter of the latter stormed the football pitch and assaulted the referee.

According to CNN Turk, Trabzonspor, Turkey's fourth most popular soccer club, could be facing a historical punishment, reports Efe.

Sunday's match was stopped at the Huseyin Avni Aker Stadium in the city of Trabzon in the 89th minute, after the supporter stormed the field and assaulted the referee, while the scoreboard showed Fenerbahce's 4-0 lead.

The 17-year-old fan started punching and kicking referee Volkan Bayarslan, who needed medical assistance afterwards.

CNN Turk reported that the Turkish Football Federation could compel Trabzonspor to play five games behind closed doors, while other media outlets spoke of a 10-game punishment.

The Turkish press also expected this incident to delay the opening of Trabzonspor's new stadium next season.
