Man sentenced to death for killing four on Taiwan metro

Taipei, April 22 (IANS) Taiwan's Supreme Court sentenced a 23-year-old man to death on Friday for killing four people and injuring 22 in a Taipei metro coach on May 21, 2014.

Zheng Jie was also deprived of his civil rights for life, Efe news quoted a court statement as saying.

The court argued there was clear evidence of Zheng being the perpetrator of the serious crimes, which were committed with full awareness and not due to any mental disorder or loss of mental faculties.

The death penalty continues to be in force in Taiwan with most islanders in favour of it although civil society organisations have been campaigning for its abolition.

A recent survey showed almost nine out of ten Taiwanese back the continuation of capital punishment, arguing that its elimination would sabotage public order and do away with a significant deterrent against crime.
