Harnessing community radio to spread skilling message

New Delhi, April 20 (IANS) This is an example of how the power of community radio is being innovatively harnessed to spread the message on skill development - a priority area for the central government.

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA), announced a competition to highlight how skill development has had a transformative impact on society.

The competition, titled "Meri Prerana Mera Hunar", will showcase the "Best Skilling Story in their Community" and will be exclusively hosted by community radios across the country.

A statement from CEMCA said: "This competition will serve as a tool to make community radio stations aware of the role they can potentially play in connecting youth to skills and skilled youth to employment and entrepreneurship.

"The entries from the competition will serve as a tool for motivating youth for skilling themselves."

There will be 11 cash prizes and the winners will be awarded at an event organised in May in New Delhi.

CEMCA was set up in 1994 by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) to promote the meaningful, relevant and appropriate use of media and technology to serve the educational and training needs of Commonwealth member-states of Asia.

It has been working to promote the use of community radio in learning for sustainable development since 2006.
