Rome, April 20 (IANS) Former Italian striker Alessandro Del Piero has said he sympathises with forward Francesco Totti's difficult situation at A.S. Roma.
The 39-year-old, who has 753 appearances for Roma, appears unlikely to be given a contract extension and may have to leave the club.
Many are comparing the situation to that of Del Piero's at Juventus. Del Pierro, who spent 19 years at Juventus, left the club in 2012.
"I feel close to my ex-Italy teammate," Del Piero was quoted as saying by football-italia.net on Wednesday.
"I know from experience that his situation is a difficult one to deal with from the inside. Regardless of how it ends though, I think he'll be one of those players who will always represent the team he played for."
Del Piero was also questioned about his former teammate Vincenzo Montella, who is currently coaching Sampdoria.
"He was a great teammate, we always got on very well. Beyond his extraordinary talent, he always showed himself to be very intelligent," he said.
"It doesn't surprise me that he went for a career as a coach, it's a challenging job, very different, it takes a lot of thinking."
"I wish him good luck and I hope to see him soon."
