442 killed in Thailand road accidents during festival

Bangkok, April 18 (IANS) A total of 442 people were killed in road accidents in Thailand during the week-long Songkran holiday which ended on Sunday, said a government agency on Monday.

A total of 3,447 road accidents were reported during Songkran festival nationwide with 34 percent deaths due to drunken driving and 33 percent due to rash driving, Xinhua cited the disaster prevention and mitigation's road safety centre as saying.

Meanwhile, a total of 3,656 people were injured in road accidents during water-splashing festival from April 11-17.

 

According to the road safety centre, 80 percent of the Songkran road mishaps involved motorcyclists.
