Meghalaya to host meet on child adoption

New Delhi, April 17 (IANS) Over 400 delegates from various parts of the northeastern states will participate in a day-long conference in Meghalaya on Monday to strengthen the norms for child adoption in the region, an official statement said.

The conference, to be inaugurated by Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi in Shillong, is also being conducted to familiarise the stakeholders with adoption programme in northeastern states about the provisions relating to adoption under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.

"The conference will also orient the stakeholders about the provisions of Adoption Guidelines - 2015 as well as the online adoption process through Child Adoption Resource Information and Guidance System (CARINGS)," the statement said.

The participants, likely to attend the conference, include State Adoption Resource Agencies (SARAs), District Child Protection Units (DCPUs), Child Welfare Committees (CWCs), Specialised Adoption Agencies (SAAs) and Child Care Institutions (CCIs) in the northeastern states.

"These guidelines are intended to provide for more effective regulation for adoption of orphan, abandoned and surrendered children and would bring more transparency and efficiency in the adoption system," the statement added.
