Vaiko to contest assembly polls after two decades

Chennai, April 16 (IANS) After nearly two decades, MDMK leader Vaiko will contest the assembly polls in Tamil Nadu from Kovilpatti constituency, the party said on Saturday.

MDMK is part of the four-party People's Welfare Front (PWF) alliance fighting the May 16 assembly polls.

The PWF - a combination of MDMK, two Left parties and Dalit party VCK- is fighting the ensuing polls in alliance with actor-turned-politician A.Vijaykant-led DMDK and former union minister G.K.Vasan-led Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC).

The MDMK is contesting in 27 out of 29 seats allotted to it under the alliance. The party has given two seats to two other smaller parties that would contest under MDMK's top symbol.

The last time Vaiko contested in an assembly electon was in 1996 and he lost to DMK candidate at Vilathikulam seat by a narrow margin.

Later he started contesting in the Lok Sabha polls and won twice from Sivakasi constituency.

In 2011, MDMK decided to boycott the assembly polls as it was not able to finalise the seat sharing agreement with AIADMK.

In 2014 Lok Sabha polls Vaiko lost from the Virudhunagar constituency.
