Strong tremors rock West Bengal after Myanmar quake

Kolkata, April 13 (IANS) Strong tremors rocked West Bengal and northeastern states on Wednesday after a powerful 6.8-magnitude quake struck along the India-Myanmar border, according to officials. Cracks appeared in the walls of some houses in Kolkata, and the city Metro service was halted for while.

Both northern and southern districts of West Bengal felt the strong tremors, an official of the regional meteorological office here said.

"The epicentre is along the India-Myanmar border," the official said.

Bihar and Jharkhand also experienced the tremors.

The tremors were felt in parts of West Bengal around 7.25 p.m., snapping communication (mobile and landline) and connectivity for a while.

People scurried out on to streets in panic while the Kolkata Metro service was halted. In the suburban Salt Lake on the northeastern fringes of the city, cracks appeared in the walls of some houses.
