Beijing, April 8 (IANS) Chinese police have arrested a man for allegedly assaulting a woman in a Beijing hotel in an incident captured on security camera that has drawn public outcry.
The 24-year-old suspect surnamed Li was arrested in Xuchang city, central Henan province, around 9.00 p.m. (local time) on Thursday, Efe news agency quoted Beijing police as saying.
Footage of the assault, which occurred on Sunday, has gone viral in recent days after it was uploaded on China's popular micro-blogging network Sina Weibo.
In the video, a woman is approached by a man in a black jacket in a corridor of the Yitel hotel. The alleged assailant is then seen violently dragging her in view of a hotel employee and a guest.
The woman reportedly said hotel staff did not try and help as the stranger assaulted her.
In response to the assault, some hotels in Beijing have organised security exercises aimed at better training staff to deal with such incidents.
China has seen a number of high-profile incidents in recent years where onlookers have failed to help people in need, including the 2011 case of a two-year-old girl who was crushed by a truck and ignored by passersby as she lay dying on the road.
