Delhi HC seeks timeline for intelligent traffic management system

New Delhi, April 7 (IANS) The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the central and state governments to preparing and submit a timeline for implementation of an intelligent traffic management system, to deal with the increasing air pollution in the national capital.

A division bench of Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva also asked both the governments to come out with a proposal with regard to allocation of specific funds for specific purposes to Delhi traffic police so that traffic problem can be resolved in the city.

It further sought details for "use helicopters by the Delhi traffic police for traffic management and specific timeline for acquisition of equipment in-sync with modern technology for traffic management".

 

The bench also directed the union home secretary, by himself or through a nominee, to hold a meeting of all agencies concerned on the issue.

Traffic police's Deputy Commissioner of Police, HQ, Manoj C. gave a presentation about existing traffic management mechanisms and future proposals of the department.

After going through the presentation, the bench said that it has become clear that Delhi traffic police trying to do something to deal with "overwhelming situation" but there is "lot to be done".

There is "lack of manpower - especially quality and trained manpower", said the bench, adding that department has to invest in infrastructure and utilisation of modern capabilities of developed nations.

The court posted the matter for April 27, on a PIL initiated by it on the issue of increasing air pollution in national capital.
