Assam polls second phase: Majority candidates young, graduates

New Delhi, April 7 (IANS) A majority of candidates who have filed nominations for the second phase of the assembly elections in Assam are young and graduates or above, says an analysis by Assam Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

According to self-sworn affidavits of 523 candidates out of 525 contesting in the second phase on April 11, 53 percent candidates are graduates or more educated and 64 percent are aged between 25 and 50 years.

While 231 (44 percent) candidates have declared their education qualification between Class 5 and 12, as many as 278 (53 percent) candidates have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above.

 

Two candidates have declared themselves to be illiterate and one candidate has simply declared himself as a literate.

The analysis found that 334 (64 percent) candidates are aged between 25 and 50 years, while 185 (35 percent) candidates have declared their age to be between 51 and 80 years. One candidate is older than 80 years.

In the gender split, only 48 (9 percent) female candidates are in the fray.
