New Delhi, April 6 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday issued a notice to the West Bengal government over the possibility of closure of a primary school due to non-availability of water.
The commission, which learnt about the situation through media reports, said the primary girls school in Sahari of Jangalmahal area has two classrooms with 60 girl students. Its toilets remain non-functional as there is no water.
"The headmaster of the school has stated that without pipeline there is no possibility of getting water. The overhead tanks are connected with a tube well but it remains ineffective as the water has completely disappeared," according to the commission.
The commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of right to education and health of the girl students enrolled in the school.
"Accordingly a notice has been issued to the West Bengal government, calling for reports within two weeks," said the commission.
