New Delhi, April 6 (IANS) The national capital on Wednesday got installed modern and user friendly public toilets made of high-end composite materials used in aircraft and high class rail coaches in 20 different locations, costing Rs.13 lakh each.
Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated one such 'Swachh Sauchalay' consisting of four toilet seats and four urinals at Sikka Market in Preet Vihar of East Delhi.
Speaking on the occasion, Naidu said: "There is a shortfall of about 4,000 public toilets in the three MCD areas and measures are being taken to bridge the gap under Swachh Bharat Mission."
Naidu said about 6.50 per cent of urban people use public toilets and the required infrastructure needs to be ensured in urban areas.
Stressing that Delhi should lead by example in ensuring cleanliness, Naidu urged the people, municipal bodies and the Delhi government to rise to the occasion.
These toilets have been installed by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) of the ministry of urban development, under Corporate Social Responsibility.
Such toilets will be made available at 10 more locations by NBCC.
Naidu said that the 'Namma' modular toilets are in use in Tamil Nadu.
Referring to the need of water supply and sewer connection for use of toilets and treatment of human waste, Naidu said his ministry has recently sanctioned Rs.223 crore to Delhi under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
Under this, Rs.113 crore will be spent on providing water supply connection and Rs.104 crore on improving sewerage networks.
The locations being provided with modern public toilets in East Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are: Preet Vihar, Veer Sawarkar Hospital, Swamy Dayanand Hospital, DDA Market (Mayur Vihar Ph-II), Anand Vihar, Loni Road Petrol Pump, Seelampur Metro Station, C-12 Block (Yamuna Vihar) and New Jaffrabad.
In South MCD, the locations are near Uphaar Cinema, near DTC Depot Kalu Sarai, Munirka DDA Flats, near Fortis Hospital, near Nehru Place Metro Station and Nehru Place District Centre.
In North Delhi, the locations are near Samaypur Badli Metro Station, GT Road (Azadpur), Nangloi Metro Station, Faseel Road and Old Tonga Stand Railway Parcel Centre, SPM Marg.
