New skill standards to help Indian workers' global mobility: Rudy

New Delhi, April 5 (IANS) Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy on Tuesday launched transnational skill standards here to match the global benchmarks in skilling, noting they would help in the "global mobility" of Indian workers.

The new standards would boost two major initiatives of the government, 'Make in India' and 'Skill India', he said.

These standards in skill development are benchmarked to Britain across 82 identified job roles. British High Commissioner to India Dominic Asquith was also present on the occasion.

In his address, Rudy said that standardisation of vocational education is crucial in bringing about a level in the efficiency of the skilled workforce.

"Our endeavour is to benchmark the standards so as to support international mobility of Indian workforce and also prepare them to work in international companies having their operations in the country,” he said.

He said that British standards have been chosen to benchmark Indian skills standards because all the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries recognise British skill certification.

India and Britain have been collaborating on skill development for a long time now.

A number of employers from GCC countries who committed employment to Indian workforce certified on the new standards were also present at the function.
