Beijing, April 5 (IANS) A wastewater treatment plant in Beijing's suburban Tongzhou district, the site of the Chinese capital's new subsidiary administrative centre, will be moved underground to hide its smell and noise.
The existing plant, which handles 84 percent of the sewage in the district, has become a headache for residents of neighbourhoods that have been built around it, Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday.
It started operation in 2002.
The new plant, with higher treatment standards and larger water reclamation capacity, will be completed by September, the local government said.
The reclaimed water will be used to irrigate green areas and refill rivers and watercourse in Beijing.
The original site will be turned into a leisure park.
