NHRC notice to Jharkhand over Muslim cattle traders' death

New Delhi, March 31 (IANS) The NHRC has issued notice to the Jharkhand government over the death of two Muslim cattle traders, whose bodies were found hanging from a tree in Latehar district earlier this month.

The National Human Rights Commission, on a complaint received on March 29, has also issued notice to the state government over lack of action in the case. It stated that the Jharkhand government is not taking action in cases of targeted attacks on Muslim cattle traders.

Referring to the incident, the commission has stated that the compensation of Rs.1 lakh announced for the families of each of the two deceased, Imtiyaz Khan and Majlum, is inadequate as they lost their sole bread earners.

On March 18, the bodies of the two men were found hanging from a tree in a village in Latehar district. These were taken to the administration headquarters.

According to reports, some cow protection vigilantes about a month ago allegedly told the men to give up cattle trade and threatened them of dire consequence if they did not do so.

The state government has been given four weeks to submit a detail report in the matter.
