Thales, India firm sign deal to develop fire control radar

Panaji, March 29 (IANS) Thales and BEL-Thales Systems Limited (BTSL), a joint venture between Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Thales, on Tuesday signed an agreement to jointly develop the PHAROS fire control radar.

The agreement on strategic cooperation is expected to allow Thales and BTSL to develop the radar for both gun and missile systems, a statement issued by the joint venture company said.

PHAROS provides defence against small, fast-moving and highly manoeuvrable air and surface targets that may also be encountered in littoral missions.

The multiple target tracker is capable of simultaneously controlling the engagement of these targets with guided ammunition in all weather conditions.

The joint development of the system will strengthen cooperation between Thales and BTSL in innovative technologies.

Thales will be responsible for the overall system design while BTSL will develop the mechanical design and radar processing modifications. Thales will also be responsible for the design and production of the radar antenna.

"This strategic step goes beyond the co-development partnership; it reaffirms our commitment to the country and to actively contribute to the 'Make in India' policy," said Serge Adrian, senior vice president of surface radars activities at Thales.
