Shillong, March 27 (IANS) Candlelight processions, baptism of newborns, and coloured Easter eggs and buns were the hallmark of the day as Christians in Meghalaya on Sunday joined their brethren the world over in celebrating Easter.
Cathedrals and churches in the Christian-majority state were thronged by people for special mass and other celebratory events.
Archbishop of Shillong the Rev. Dominic Jala presided over the Easter mass at the Grotto Chapel in the Mary Help of Christians Cathedral.
Pascal commemoration in many parishes was marked with candlelight processions and baptism of newborn.
Leaders of various political parties greeted people on the occasion.
Governor V. Shanmuganathan said Easter was a festival of hope and a special day to remember the god's sacrifice for the freedom of mankind.
"Easter brings happiness, Easter brings god's endless blessings, Easter brings fresh love and prosperity. I hope that the blessings of god fill our hearts with peace and joy and make us a better human being," Shanmuganathan said, wishing the people of Meghalaya.
Greeting the people, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said: "May this Easter bring bountiful of blessing to one and all."
