Tripura State Rifles trooper kills lover, shoots self

Agartala, March 22 (IANS) A trooper of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) shot his girlfriend dead and later killed himself with his service rifle, police said on Tuesday. The authorities have suspended three TSR officials over the incident.

Mrinal Das, 32, stormed into the rented house of 25-year-old nursing student Tanushree Karmakar late on Monday night at Durjoynagar near here and shot the young woman dead, police spokesman Uttam Kumar Bhowmik told IANS.

"Later, Das shot himself dead on the spot," Bhowmik said.

The trooper had driven his bike for more than 125 km to reach Durjoynagar in western Tripura from his place of posting in southern Tripura.

The official said Das, a rifleman of the Ninth Battalion, was in a relationship with Tanushree for the past few years.

"Recently, the girl started avoiding Mrinal after she learnt that he was married and he has a child," the spokesperson said.

Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Anurag and IGP (TSR) S.S. Chaturvedi were probing the incident.

Making a statement in response to demands by opposition members in the assembly, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, who also holds the home portfolio, on Tuesday said there were some loopholes in maintaining authority in the TSR battalion which caused the incident.

The authorities have suspended a Nayek Subedar (equivalent to police sub-inspector) and two Havildars in connection with the incident.

The Tripura State Rifles is an elite force and is trained in line with central paramilitary forces to engage in counter-insurgency operations.
