Shillong, March 22 (IANS) A top 'area commander' of Garo militant group GNLA, who was wanted for his involvement in killings and bombings in Meghalaya, was on Tuesday killed in a gun battle with SWAT commandos, officials said.
Garo National Liberation Army leader Salnang T. Sangma alias Balti Momin alias Walnang T. Sangma was killed in the Bangsi Alda forested area in North Garo Hills, Inspector General of Police (Operations) G.H.P. Raju told IANS.
Acting on a tip, the SWAT commandos raided the area where GNLA militants were camping, waiting for food supplies from villagers.
He said the militants fired at the commandos, who then retaliated.
Sangma was wanted in several cases of murder, kidnapping, bombings and extortion.
