New Delhi, March 21 (IANS) A court here on Monday sought an action taken report from the police on a plea seeking an FIR against Kanhaiya Kumar and others for allegedly raising anti-Brahminism slogans and burning the Manusmriti, the ancient socio-religious text.

Metropolitan Magistrate Lovleen asked the Delhi Police to file the report by June 1 while hearing the complaint of one Ajay Gautam who said that on March 8, 2016, some of the Jawaharlal Nehru University students had allegedly burnt copies of Manusmriti in the campus during a demonstration.

He contended that, being a Brahmin, he felt offended after watching on 'Youtube' Jawaharlal Nehru Students Union president Kanhaiya and other students including Umar Khalid allegedly raising slogans against Hindu religion and Brahmin caste.

Saying that acts of the accused persons were "highly illegal, unjustified, actionable and un-ignorable and they were liable to be punished under the law", Gautam prayed that Vasant Kunj Police should be directed to register the case under the relevant sections of law.

He had "fundamental right to practice any religion, faith under the constitution and no one can say he wants 'Azadi' (freedom) from one caste or others", Gautam contended.
