Turkey summons Belgian ambassador over PKK tent issue

Ankara, March 21 (IANS) Turkey summoned the Belgian ambassador in Ankara on Sunday to deliver an official protest note over Belgium allowing the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) to set up a tent in Brussels, Xinhua cited a report in Daily News.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu also held a phone conversation with his Belgian counterpart Didier Reynders on Sunday, expressing Turkey's sensitivities over the PKK tent in the city center.

Cavusoglu said allowing a terror organisation to erect a tent in the centre of Europe is unacceptable. He demanded swift removal of the tent and a ban on PKK activities in Belgium.

The PKK is a terror organisation like the Islamic State, Cavusoglu said, adding one should not distinguish between terror organisations.

A tent was set up by PKK supporters near the site of the EU-Turkey Summit in Brussels last Thursday.

The PKK has been waging a separatist war against Turkey since 1984. It is listed as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US and the European Union.
