Russian footballer fined for showing shirt with image of Putin

Moscow, March 18 (IANS) The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has fined Lokomotiv Moscow midfielder Dmitri Tarasov 5,000 euros ($5,633) for appearing in a T-shirt with the image of Russian President Vladimir Putin, after his team's game in Turkey against Fenerbahce.

"The CEDB (Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body) has decided to fine FC Lokomotiv Moskva player Dmitry Tarasov 5,000 euros," said a statement released by the association on Friday.

The punishment coincides with the birthday of the Russian footballer who turned 29 on Friday, reports Efe.

On February 16, at the end of the game Tarasov took off his jersey to show a shirt with the image of Putin in military uniform with a phrase written in Russian, which translated to "The most polite president".

The player said his gesture was a sign of support for Putin.

Paragraph 7 of Article 14 of the UEFA disciplinary regulations prohibits all forms of political, ideological and religious propaganda.
