Kolkata, March 18 (IANS) Special teams are being sent in batches to poll-bound West Bengal and Assam to assist the states' chief electoral officers in assessing preparedness of the election machinery at the grass root level, the Election Commission said in a statement on Friday.

The commission on Thursday deputed five special teams to review poll preparedness across 21 districts of West Bengal for the upcoming assembly elections.

"The special team will take inputs from CEO West Bengal beforehand district wise and make visit the districts. On their return, they will give their feedback to the CEO and to the Election Commission," said the poll panel statement.

"The special team(s) are being sent in batches to Bengal and Assam. The other teams will also visit other poll-going states in the near future."

Each of the five teams in Bengal are being led by chief electoral officers of five states - Punjab, Chattisgarh, New Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka - and include four other officials: the additional or deputy CEO, one Indian Police Service officer and two poll panel officials.

"Five special teams will undertake comprehensive review of poll preparedness across 21 districts from March 18 to March 22," said additional chief electoral officer Dibyendu Sarkar on Thursday.
