Denmark eyes 10 medals for Rio Olympics

Copenhagen, March 18 (IANS) The Sports Confederation of Denmark (DIF) has said the country aims to win 10 medals at the Rio Olympics in August.

Should Denmark realise the goal, it will be the highest number for the Nordic country since the games in 1948, when it netted 20 medals, reports Xinhua.

"Ten medals will be a sensational achievement in a historical perspective, but it is a realistic objective," said Morten Rodtwitt, chef de mission for the Danish Olympic team at a press conference on Thursday.

"There is such great quality of the athletes and in the associations at the moment and our preparations are so thorough and ambitious that we can announce this objective," Rodtwitt said.

Badminton, wrestling, cycling, handball, kayaking, rowing, sailing and swimming are considered the country's best medal prospects at the summer games, the DIF said.

The Danish Olympic team heading for Rio is likely to include some 135 athletes, and tennis star Caroline Wozniacki has been named as the flag bearer of the Danish delegation at the opening ceremony.

Denmark won two gold, four silver and three bronze medals at the London Olympics 2012 -- the best Danish performance at a Summer Olympics since 1948.
