Guwahati, March 18 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday filed his nomination papers for the assembly elections that are to be held in two phases on April 4 and 11.
The Congress leader is seeking election from Titabar constituency in Jorhat district which he has represented since 2001.
A large number of Congress leaders, workers and supporters escorted Gogoi to the sub-division office in Titabar where he filed his nomination papers. The chief minister was with his wife Dolly Gogoi.
"It is really good to see such a huge gathering of people. I am thankful for the love and affection the people of Titabar have shown me. I am confident that I will win the election," said Gogoi after coming out of the SDO office.
Earlier, Gogoi's supporters took out a massive procession in Titabar.
He said the rally was enough to ensure his victory in the constituency and that he had no plans to campaign separately in Titabar for the polls.
"I am thankful that the people of Titabar have come in large numbers to support me despite the fact that I have not been able to spend much time here," said Gogoi.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Lok Sabha MP from Jorhat district Kamakhya Prasad Tasa against Gogoi. Tasa also filed his nomination papers on Friday in Titabar.
Assam has a 126-member legislative assembly. Polling for 65 constituencies will take place on April 4 and for 61 constituencies on April 11.
Friday was the last date for filing of nominations for constituencies going to the polls in the first phase.
