New Delhi, March 14 (IANS) The government has not received any proposal to open a Madame Tussauds wax museum here, Culture and Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma said on Monday.
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Sharma said that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Britain in November last year, Merlin Entertainment PLC (the company that owns Madame Tussauds) had announced to open its first museum in Delhi in early 2017. "However, no proposal has been received," he said.
According to media reports, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was approached by Merlin Entertainment PLC in January to get his wax statue installed in Madame Tussauds Delhi museum, which is yet to become a reality.
Madame Tussauds is a famous wax museum based in London. It is also located in 20 other cities including New York, Amsterdam, Bangkok, Beijing and Singapore.
Among Indian celebrities, the museum has wax statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit and Sachin Tendulkar.
