Weather in Kashmir to improve after rain, snowfall

Srinagar, March 12 (IANS) Weather across Jammu and Kashmir is likely to improve on Sunday afternoon after two days of rain and snowfall, an official of the meteorological department said on Saturday.

Incessant rains in the plains and snowfall in the higher reaches took place in Jammu and Kashmir during the last two days, bringing down both day and night temperatures.

"The Western Disturbance (WD) is still persisting over Jammu and Kashmir. Although there has been no rain in the valley for six hours, it is still raining in the Jammu region," Sonam Lotus, the director of the local meteorological department, told IANS.

"The weather will start improving from tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon onwards."

The strategic Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed for vehicular traffic on Friday evening following landslides and falling stones in Sher Bibi in Ramban district.

"Traffic will be allowed to move on the Jammu-Srinagar highway after the weather improves," an official of the state traffic department said in Jammu.

Authorities have issued a warning of avalanches in the higher reaches of the state, asking people living in these areas to move about with caution.
